Dr. Henry Giroux
As Professor in McMaster University’s department of English and cultural studies, Giroux is a true believer in education as a shaper of society and future generations. American born, he fled George W. Bush’s U.S. to continue his gadfly critiques from Canada, and has authored numerous books — the latest Zombie Politics and Culture in the Age of Casino Capitalism. Named as one of the top public intellectuals in America, he maintains that education is the best weapon against the “casino capitalism” that has gambled away the lives of millions of young people. Currently, he’s focused on “the economic and ideological workings of a savage market fundamentalism and its ongoing attacks on all elements of the social state.” And (Harper government alert) he attacks the rise of “the punishing state and emergence of governing through a crime-youth-control complex.” In January, 2012, Giroux was named "One of the 12 Canadians Changing the Way we Think," by thestar.com. Giroux believes we face no small task for the coming year: preventing a “new authoritarianism and the collapse of the ideals of democracy in North America and other countries in the West.” And 2012 may be just the beginning.
